What do you drive, Mac or PC?
Balind on 03 Jul 2007 | Musings

I’ve used both my entire career but my home business has always been PC until recently. Having nestled in tightly at Elastic People which is entirely run by Macintosh computers, when it recently came time to update my home office I chose to go with a MacBook Pro and I’m pretty happy with that decision. So much so that I think I can outline exactly what type of person would prefer a PC and what type a Mac simply by comparing them to cars.

If you were part of a Formula-1 team would you prefer to be the race car driver or the race car mechanic? 90% of us would prefer to be the driver and It’s really that simple.

If you’re buying a car are you the type of person that would prefer a foreign car that costs more up front but is extremely well designed inside and out however when it needs fixing or a part needs changed it’s more expensive, but you just take it to the experts and they deal with it so that you can focus on driving and your goals in life that have nothing to do with the inner workings of cars? Or…

Would you rather get an American car where you can interchange the parts and play and build a super-car that might have problems because of incompatibility but you don’t mind because you’re so down with it that you enjoy figuring out why it’s not working properly in your quest to create your own beautiful unique beast. Paint it with flames, give it oil-changes, wipe it with a diaper, these are all fun activities for you.
I’ll leave it up to you to guess which is which.

Why do I prefer the Mac?
- I’m a designer so the attractive OS has a affect on my over-all experience.
- The Apple brand is so stylish and well-thought-out I enjoy being associated with it.
- Don’t have to worry about viruses, pop-ups and weird messages.
- Everything comes from one source (Apple), so I trust it.
- Even though I’m not involved in the iLife and .Mac culture because I use more advanced technology, I appreciate the vibe.

What do I still appreciate about the PC even after the change-over?
- Navigating files and folders, right-click has more options - in Apples attempt to keep things simple so people don’t get confused it inadvertently slows down us more advanced users.
- PC is more complex which can be a burden but it’s also empowering for those of us that enjoy understanding everything that we rely on. Kind of like driving standard, once you’ve got it down it’s fun.

Nice comparison!
If Mac is like an automatic, and PC/Windows is like a standard… then a customized Linux OS is like a spaceship! But one that’s sometimes hard to control.

B,
You know my position on the whole topic, and my inherent hate towards all things Apple. Funny thing is, after being a hardcore PC head for 15 years or so, I now somehow feel comfortable with my MacBook Pro.
The OS X gui SUCKS ASS, can’t really compare it to Windows XP/Vista - I mean, don’t get me wrong, if you’re a run of the mill user, and not a power user, OS X is great. But, if you like to get funky with your OS (like I do), and are an application developer, OS X (GUI) FAILS to deliver. - But…… I managed to pacify my angst with one fact. Mac OS X is not really the old shitty OS it used to be.. Its Darwin.. and Darwin = UNIX !!
By refusing to use the OS X gui, I’ve forced myself to become a UNIX head - something I’ve been trying to make happen for years, but didn’t really have a venue for it until now.
P.S. Nikov, OS X is Unix. As you know, Linux is derived from Unix.. so, mac is in fact a spaceship (in disguise), or a spaceship with tipTronic
Damn.. that was a long post.. I sometimes surprise my self with the amount of spew that comes out of my fingers…

I read somewhere that OS X is a modified version of BSD Unix, which I used to run on an old PC.
What I really like about a Linux system is that you can install a powerful, stable, well designed, open source program for just about anything you’d want to do with a computer. I can’t see that happening for the Macintosh platform. But I’d love to be wrong!..

I must say that I agree. You may have found the root of my reason for despising the OSX GUI. I run Linux at home and on my laptop. Currently my laptop won’t boot. I know how to fix it and am currently awaiting a part to make it much easier. (It’s an EeePC and I need to backup some data from it. I’m going to be using a MicroSDHC card for loading another OS onto and then I’ll use that to backup specific files) I’m a power user. I prefer working with my hands. I’m a computer engineering major as well. You’ve done a good job of describing what it is that causes me to be disgusted by the way Apple works. It’s expensive and doesn’t allow for much room, which is the complete opposite of what I look for.
Something else of note. It seems that Apple goes out of their way to make their stuff incompatible with everyone else. It’s rather annoying and people need pointless hacks to keep things running. Unnecessary as OSX can run a fair bit of Linux software without much trouble.

Interesting article, but saying that it’s virus-and-spyware free is unfortunately downright wrong. They may not have as many, but that’s only because no self-respecting hacker (which has been a PC-oriented hobby) would touch a mac with a ten foot stick. However, they have happened, and when someone finally writes a nasty mac virus (iVirus or something like that) it’s gonna majorly mess with the unprotected masses (or the unprotected extreme minority, but that’s beside the point). Also, tracking cookies, as it turns out, work just as well on macs as PCs. And as far as all the software coming from Apple, it may ensure a lack of bugs, but it also ensures a lack of competition and any variety of software, which is typically what brings new features to the table. I’m traditionally a Windows guy, but switched to Linux a few years ago and have never looked back. I thought about mac a few months ago just because they look cool, but I’ve seen too many fry for no reason to ever get one.
