A Guide to Choosing Great Hobbies
Balind on 03 Aug 2007 | Tips & Advice

Having a variety of interests keeps our minds stimulated, gives us something personal to focus on and improve at, but mostly, helps to balance us out as human beings. Here’s a few suggestions on how to incorporate hobbies into your lifestyle, why their important and which ones you should pick.

The type of hobbies you choose will say something about you, whether you’re committed to learning and being interested in life, or if you’re generally bored and looking for ways to kill time. Your hobbies will be a very good indicator in terms of matching you up with the right employer or companion.

The fundamental principle of choosing the correct hobby is that it benefit your life in some way otherwise it has no use but to distract your from reality. In order to do that your hobbies need to have goals, clearly defined ones.

Following are the four areas of life that if aren’t already covered in your work and lifestyle need to be addressed in your hobbies in order to evolve into being a well-rounded and balanced individual. The more your hobbies overlap into these areas the better.

MENTAL

This hobby should exercise your mind somehow and it’s goals should be related to developing your career or building a second career.
One Personal Example: You’re reading it. This weblog brands me as an interactive specialist, gives me a reason to research topics related to my field, gives me a format to contribute to the industry and allows potential clients, employers or associates to get to know me prior to meeting. It also doubles as a social hobby because it gives me a vehicle to make new contacts. If you caught all that you’d see that my decision to begin a weblog was a win, win, win, no down side.

PHYSICAL

Physical - This hobby should incorporate fitness and it’s goals should involve improving fitness levels based on your needs. This could be lowering your heart rate, gaining strength, burning calories, whatever you need to get in the positive side of health.
One Personal Example: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). I train like I’m preparing for competition simply for the sake of the training. I enjoy MMA because it covers mental, physical and social as a hobby. The better physical condition you’re in the better you’ll be, the smarter you are the better you’ll be and I like hanging out with people that are in their mental and physical peak so it’s a great way to make friends.

SOCIAL

This hobby should allow you to build new and foster existing relationships with family and friends. The goals should to eventually always be surrounded by people that you learn from and make you a better person.
One Personal Example: Beach volleyball. This obviously is a physical activity as well but the beach volleyball scene is so social that it satisfies each need equally. It’s a team sport that requires communication and intelligence to perform so it tends to attract cool people and good vibes.

SPIRITUAL

This hobby should develop your relationship with yourself and/or God. The goal is to become an enlightened individual that is in total harmony with the planet earth and all it’s inhabitants.
One Personal Example: My spiritual hobby is more indirect, it’s basically to surround myself with intelligent individuals that have their own opinion about complex subjects. This broadens my perspective and helps me evolve my view.

I’m a young go-getter so I get along best with other ambitious people and that’s reflected in the ways I choose to spend my personal time and I can identify other like-minded individuals by the types of activities they engage in. This is of course helpful if you understand the benefit of meeting and surrounding yourself with high quality people.

Recently I felt that most of my hobbies, personal ideas, were unrealized, so I created a blog to help keep me accountable.
Great advice. I’ve never come across such a holistic approach to design, development & living your life. Very inspiring. Thanks.
